The following is a guide to help readers, and the players, better understand technology for Stelvik Station and how it functions. While, not hard science fiction, there are some technological rules to follow.
Terms
Petal – A simple way to express what each of the three arms look like. Residents may refer to each petal by it’s known number.
Apartment – All residents of Stelvik Station live in an apartment that is by all accounts owned by the station government itself. Every resident pays some sort of rent, that is paid monthly and typically automatic. Size of the apartment does not dictate cost, luxurious apartments cost more. Apartment buildings are towers across the station and located on each of the three petals.
Tele-Net – the modern equivalent would be television. This is accessible across the station on various viewscreens. There are viewscreens in each apartment, sometimes multiple, and across different points of the station.
Data Pad – These are electronic tablets and are also used by all residents. Data streams through the communications systems are accessible through these.
Communications Systems – This comes in two varieties. There are verbal communications and information communications. Both are on separate data streams and accessible through a data pad or through the tele-net.
Holographic Programming – There are two varieties. There are the interactive holographic programs which are accessible on holographic platforms. The day/night cycle on the station is visible through the holographic systems that provide an artificial skyline.
Station Design
O’Neill Cylinder Concept – The basic way Stelvik Station maintains it’s artificial gravity is utilizing the O’Neill Cylinder concept. By maintaining a constant rotation it maintains the gravity near the center of the station.
Layout & Design – Stelvik Station looks like a giant flower with a ring in the center. There are 3 arms, called petals, that come from the central hub and ring. The industrial district and docking ports are on the center ring.
The upper, middle, and lower living districts are spread across the three flower petals that come from the central ring. The Government district is located on one of the three, the corporate district is on one of the three as well, and the main marketplace is on one of three. There are smaller market districts on the other two flower petals as well.
Amenities – There are parks, small lakes, and other features scattered across the station. Swimming facilities, schools, and such are also spread out across the station.
Schools – The entire school district has a central hub for each levels of school. There are sub-buildings scattered across the station. So for example while a student may go to Stelvik Middle School, they don’t necessarily go to the same middle school as another student.
