Serena Morgan had forgotten a few things at the office when they closed down for the gala, and as such decided to go in on an unusual day. It was quieter than she’d expected, though she wasn’t quite surprised about it. She grabbed the files she needed, anything to keep her busy and get her mind off what happened.
As she came out of the front doors to the mining corporation’s main offices in the commercial district that was when she noticed the same councilor from the gala. Serena hesitated trying to remember his name, and wondering if he’d followed her to the office. “Oh hello there,” She said once he’d decided to actually walk over to her.
Sam had been out for a walk when he’d noticed Serena, and when she came out of the building the man decided to actually talk to her. Everyone for his family were now safe and sound, his daughter Kate hadn’t been in the gala hall when things happened, and neither had his wife. Not everyone was quite so lucky.
“I saw you coming out and thought I’d see how things were,” Sam told her, “Sorry if I startled you or anything.” He said, his expression softening quite a bit.
Serena shook her head as she started to walk away from the building, aware that Sam was now walking right along side her. It had taken her a minute to recognize him, or even put a face to a name, before the gala she’d known little about many of the government officials. “Nah you didn’t startle me,” She said to him.
“For a moment, however, I thought you’d followed me or something.” Serena told him as she walked alongside him down the walkway between the corporate buildings. Once they’d gotten to the main walkway she leaned against the railing that overlooked the lower part of the commercial district. She stood there for a little while without saying anything.
Sam stopped next to her once they’d stopped walking. She’d not answered his question, but had left him with a few more. He looked in the same general direction as she was looking, “Nope I always go for a walk at this time. Besides, I had wanted to clear my head after the gala.”
Serena certainly understood that, and she nodded when he mentioned it. She’d decided it was time to answer his question anyway, “Everyone is alright,” She informed him casually. “Addi is a little shaken up, but she’s at the park with her friend this morning.”
Serena looked at him, “How are you this morning?”
Sam shrugged, “I’m all right,” He answered her. “Allyson and Kate weren’t in the gala hall when that psychopath burst in with the young doctor and a disruptor.” He told her, he wasn’t trying to brag and there was a hint of concern in his voice as he spoke.
“Yeah,” Serena replied with a nod. “I wonder how she’s doing? She didn’t look very impressed and honestly neither did that security officer who tried to talk that man down. Any idea what he was trying to accomplish?”
Sam assumed the woman was talking about the man with the weapon and shrugged, “Don’t know.” He answered, “But, it proves we need more security personnel.” He said softly as he leaned over the railing with his arm. He looked directly at Serena, “Which is what I’ve been trying to push for. We shouldn’t need to rely on our kids to do something like taking out a bad guy.”
Serena found herself agreeing with what he’d just said. Though, it sounded great in theory or what have you, but in practice? Serena wasn’t sure what the actual answer was and her daughter seemed to be okay. They’d gone and talked to a specialist. There weren’t any immediate concerns, but the specialist said Addi was probably still in some sort of shock.
“That doesn’t seem to be going very well,” Serena pointed out.
Sam had to agree with her and he even nodded his head a couple times. “Yep,” He answered, “I’ve gotten a few people on board for the cause. But, I think our new Primarch is a little afraid to do what needs to be done in order to better protect the station.”
Serena said nothing as she listened, it was like the man was trying to make some sort of political stance or something? She couldn’t quite place what he was attempting to do, but it didn’t really matter because the elections were now over. Had Sam ran for Primarch and lost the nomination? Serena didn’t follow the political situation of the station.
Nah, there was some sort of political maneuvering at play. “I don’t really pay that much attention to politics.” She answered him, in the back of Serena’s mind she questioned just how successful Sam had been.
Sam nodded, “I understand that,” He answered and looked away. “Some people would probably say that if we had more people in security it would make a difference though.” He told her, his tone still quite casual. As if he were just trying to make conversation with anyone who he thought would listen to him.
Serena shrugged as she looked at him. The young woman realized that was exactly what he was trying to do. She’d talk to Howard about it at some point in the near future, but that’s what the man was trying to do. “Sorry Mister Bancroft,” Serena started, “Honestly politics is rather boring to me.”
Sam didn’t know if he could recover from that comment, and he looked away from her. He’d overplayed his hand with her. And, he realized his batting average right in that moment was far lower than he’d wanted it to be. He needed a different approach, “I understand.” He said softly. “The main thing is that your daughter is safe.”
Serena smiled warmly, “She seems to be,” Serena answered him. Then she pushed herself away from the railing she’d been leaning over. “Anyway, I need to get home.” Serena then walked away from the man. Something in her mind seemed to be telling her something about him. Serena always believed that the government shouldn’t overreach so much. And, that seemed to be exactly the kind of person this man was.
Sam watched her go and he sighed while lowering his shoulder. If he was going to get more people to believe in his political motivations and what his party stood for he needed to be more subtle. That was the answer, more subtle. He turned and wandered away, while looking over his shoulder from time to time.
