Amelia Baird and her twin brother Jack were born in 2363 on the planet Mars where their parents worked as school teachers. Amelia regularly visited Earth and during her high school years she even spent some time at Starfleet Academy to learn about what Starfleet did. Her interests in the mechanical workings of different starships led her to choose engineering as her focus.
Amelia applied for Starfleet Academy in 2380 and was accepted from the planet Mars where she was born and grew up along with her brother Jack. She left in 2381 for the Academy and chose an engineering focus. She graduated in 2385 before being assigned to the USS Fonvor, a Nebula-class starship assigned on a deep space expedition near the Cardassian and Federation border.
Her abilities were quickly realized despite a number of issues and technical problems the ship had during its time on expedition. When the Chief Engineer on board was killed and the current Deputy Chief Engineer was promoted he picked Amelia to fill his former role. The technical problems continued until 2388 when Starfleet decided to decommission the Fonvor.
In 2388 she was selected to be the Chief Engineer of Stelvik Station both due to her technical expertise and her time working on a scientific ship. Along with her selection as Chief Engineer, Amelia was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
